The Colorado Street Bridge has been the site of over 100 suicides since its construction in 1913. This photo is from the May 11, 1953 L.A. Herald-Examiner, one of many photographs of suicide scenes that the paper published and sensationalized by inserting arrows showing the arc of the unfortunate victim’s fall to his or her death.

The caption reads: “Scene Of Arroyo Seco Bridge Death Leap - Pasadena’s Colorado Street Bridge, once noted for its suicide plunges, was the scene of a new death leap today. Despondent after a Mother’s Day reunion with his family, Edward Ayala, 39, of 805 Avenue 60, plunged into the Arroyo Seco along course of broken line, police reported.”
